A Concerning Trend: Wyoming’s Highway Deaths on the Rise

As of early August 2025, a troubling picture is emerging on Wyoming’s highways. Data from the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) and other sources indicates that the number of traffic fatalities has taken a significant and concerning turn for the worse compared to last year. While 2024 saw a notable improvement, 2025 is reversing that positive trend.

By the Numbers: A Stark Comparison

Comparing the year-to-date figures, the contrast between 2024 and 2025 is stark:

  • Fatalities: As of mid-May, Wyoming recorded 35 fatalities, a 25% increase over the 28 recorded during the same period in 2024. The total count has continued to climb through the summer, with numerous single and multi-fatality crashes documented in June and July.
  • Fatal Crashes: The number of fatal crashes has also risen, with 32 crashes recorded as of mid-May, representing a 28% increase over 2024’s 25.

Looking at a longer historical perspective, this year’s trend is particularly troubling. While 2023 was a record-breakingly bad year for highway deaths in Wyoming with 144 total fatalities, 2024’s total of 107 seemed to signal a positive correction. Unfortunately, 2025’s current pace puts the state on track to once again surpass 100 deaths by the end of the year, undoing the progress made in 2024.

The “Why”: Analyzing Contributing Factors

When examining the causes of these crashes, a common theme emerges: driver behavior, not environmental conditions, is the primary issue. A closer look at the data reveals some alarming trends:

  • Speeding: Speeding-related fatalities have seen a massive 40% increase.
  • Seat Belt Use: Perhaps most alarming is the 56% increase in deaths where a lack of seat belt use was a factor. This highlights a critical and preventable aspect of the problem.
  • Ideal Conditions: A majority of the fatal crashes occurred on dry roads and in clear weather, reinforcing the conclusion that human error and careless behavior are the main culprits.

Counties such as Sweetwater and Laramie are particularly affected, accounting for a significant portion of the state’s fatal crashes. The data strongly suggests a trend toward more aggressive or careless driving.

What You Can Do

The increase in highway deaths is a sobering reminder of the importance of safe driving practices. As we continue through the year, every driver plays a vital role in reversing this dangerous trend.

  • Buckle Up: This is the most crucial and simplest step you can take to protect yourself and your passengers.
  • Slow Down: Adhere to posted speed limits and adjust your speed to conditions.
  • Focus on the Road: Avoid all distractions, including cell phones.
  • Drive Sober: Never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Wyoming’s highways are a part of our daily lives, connecting our communities and allowing us to explore the beautiful landscape. Let’s work together to make them safer for everyone.
